Cornerstone3D and Cornerstone3DTools: 7 New Annotation Tools

Cornerstone3D and its library, Cornerstone3DTools, enables visualization and manipulation of medical images viewed in web browsers. As the name suggests, ​​Cornerstone3DTools enables drawing and manipulation of annotations in 3D space. Annotations in Cornerstone3DTools are rendered as SVG elements and are stored in the actual physical space of the image, which ensures they are displayed at the best possible quality on any monitor and allows for rendering/modification of the same annotations in multiple viewports in your web browser. In this blog post, we’ll show seven of the new annotation tools: length tool, probe tool, rectangle ROI tool, elliptical ROI tool, bidirectional tool, angle tool, and arrow annotate tool.

Annotation Tools

Length Tool

The length tool allows you to measure the distance between two points on a slice. It can be used in all imaging planes, including oblique reconstructed planes.

Probe Tool

The probe tool allows you to select a location and see the value of a voxel and its index. It can be used in all perpendicular views (axial, sagittal, coronal). This tool’s text box is dynamically generated based on the viewport’s underlying Modality, so, if the viewport is displaying CT, then Hounsfield units will be shown, and if the viewport is displaying PET, then SUV units will be shown.

Rectangle ROI Tool

Mean, standard deviation, max, and area of a rectangular region of interest can be calculated using the rectangle ROI tool. It can be used in all perpendicular views (axial, sagittal, coronal). This tool’s text box lines are dynamically generated based on the viewport’s underlying Modality, so, if the viewport is displaying CT, then the statistics will be shown in Hounsfield units, and if the viewport is displaying PET, then the statistics will be shown in SUV units.

Elliptical ROI Tool

Mean, standard deviation, max, and area of an elliptical region of interest can also be calculated using the elliptical ROI tool. It can be used in all perpendicular views (axial, sagittal, coronal). This tool’s text box lines are also dynamically generated based on the viewport’s underlying Modality.

Bidirectional Tool

The bidirectional tool allows you to measure length and width at the same time. It can be used in all planes, including oblique reconstructed planes.

Angle Tool

The angle tool allows you to measure the angle between three points.

The arrow annotate tool allows you to draw an arrow and add text on an image.
